Sotogrande prepares to enjoy the best polo in the world

  • The 48th edition of the Santa María Polo Club International Tournament is getting underway on 25 April with more than 20 teams competing.
  • Five High Handicap teams are already confirmed this season.
  • Some of the best players in the world such as: Pablo Mac Donough, Juan Martín Nero and Gonzalo Pieres will battle for trophies in Sotogrande.
  • The Saturadys 17 (Silver Cup) and 31 August (Gold Cup), are the dates chosen for the major finals of the tournament.

The major polo spectacle, ready to begin in Sotogrande. The 48th edition of the Santa María Polo Club Summer International Tournament has all of its matters in order and is ready to take off and offer the public the greatest international polo spectacle in Continental Europe. More than one month of tournament, with a figure of over 20 teams (thus far, 6 are confirmed in the Low Handicap, 8 in the Medium Handicap and 5 in the High Handicap), including some of the best players in the world.

Sport and culture in Sotogrande

Polo is culture in Sotogrande but it is also a party and a lifestyle. A very special way of understanding the summer season, as in the resort a spending day of the summer season cannot be understood without finishing at the stands or pitch areas of Santa Maria Polo Club enjoying a good game of polo.

As for the sport, it is worth highlighting that a total of five teams, as a minimum, (over the coming days, before the start of the tournament some more may be agreed) are confirmed. They notably include some big names that are well-known by local fans such as La Indiana, Dos Lunas and Brunei. But not only will these recognizable temas, considered to be some of the best in the world, will grab the headlines during the month of competition. The presence of world class players such as Pablo MacDonough, Juan Martín Nero, Clemente Zavaleta and Gonzalo Pieres will place the focus of a large part of the polo world on Sotogrande.

Key Dates

The opening of the tournament will be on Thursday 25 July although its official presentation will be delayed a few hours, to Friday 26. Having said that, the different categories will have begun their respective categories before Saturday. The first of the major key dates of the calendar will be 17August with the celebration of the Grand Finale of the High Handicap Silver Cup, while the Gold Cup will take place on 31 August.

Other new developments of this edition

The sponsorship of this 48th edition of the International Summer Tournament at Santa María Polo Club is being provided by the company Mansion which arrives in Sotogrande, as the main sponsor of the competition. Also, with regard to the High Handicap Cups, Heineken 00 is collaborating with the Bronze Cup, Royal Bliss with the Silver Cup and LG Signature, with the Gold Cup.

It is also worth highlighting that International Summer Tournament at Santa María Polo Club, alongside the White Summer initiative , is completely revamping its entertainment agenda parallel of the sport. No fewer than 65 activities are slammed during the celebration of the tournament (children’s workshop, musical performances, tastings, etc.) notably including concerts such as those of Rosario Flores, La Casa Azul, Sofia Ellar and Viva Suecia. Ultimately, another summer that presents all the attractions to enjoy a memorable season of polo in Sotogrande.
